!LETTER: Lugwig, Ark., Oct. 3, 1913, Mr. Loyd Martin, Dear Borther I will now try to answer y our most kind and welcome letter which I received yesterday. I was more than glad to get it . Was proud to think that you had not for-got me. How are you by this time? Fine I hope . We are all well except Papa he is not doing any good. He can't see as good now as he coul d when Guss & Lannie was down here. Papa said tell you he wished you would come home and sta y this winter with us. Mamma said tell you that it almost made her sick when she heard tha t you had gone so far-away. Sister and the kids are going to leave to-morrow the 4th for Han na. Addie and Ted is here now. Well Loyd I picked 20 pounds of cotton this morning, don't y ou think that is a lot? We have got out 5 hundred on our second bail, and have got most of t he corn gathered. I think the peaches did very well considering the dry weather. Loyd hav e you found you a girl out there in the wild-west I am afraid you will get to sweet workin g in the sugar beats. Mr. Loyd Martin, Dear Son I will try to write you a fe w lines I was glad to hear from you once more would be more than glad to see you I need som e one here so bad to help me with pa at times he has such bad spells I would be glad you cou ld make up your mind to come home an stay a year or two any way. Ed is still living at town b ut he is off at work most of the time you talked about cuting ice we have not had but very li ttle hard enough to break down hear this winter sister is running the hotel at Hanna she is d oing well Zola is up there staying with her going to school this winter me and Arris is havi ng a hard time but maybe we will get through some way if were able to hire a hand to help Arr is with the work we don't hear from Carl at all don't know where he is it bothers me so I can t hardly hold up some times Will close for this time write soon and oftern your loving mothe r Mary Martin

!BIO: [Information from Sue Webb, Clarksville, Arkansas 72830.] As to Aunt Zola - I found "Zo la" single (living in) from tulsa as the listing for children in the Mary (Bean) Martin famil y taken from the "King Bean Scrapbook" - one of Guy King's publications - I checked some of m y earliest notes on Aunt Zola recorded on the William Thomas "Bud" Martin family group record s. I do have listed the possibilities of other marriages - maybe a Johnson or Allen - Growin g up I never knew or recall an adult male with she & Allene (her only child) when they woul d be visiting us. You probably recall the 1920 Arkansas federal census where she was liste d Zola E. Taylor, daughter 25 & Allene M. Taylor, age 2 as granddaughter in the Wm. T. Marti n household. You'll see Allene in some of the pictures I sent you taken with Gr. Grandmothe r Mary (Bean) Martin. I have one of the "Memoriums" from Aunt Zola's funeral service at Bart leville, Oklahoma - (she had died at Bartlesville) at the Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel Mar 11 , 1983, interment was that afternoon at Mt. Vernon Cem. The "Memorium" stated, "In memory o f Zola M. Taylor Carter." I've always assumed the "M" was for Martin, Allene has been in a n ursing home for some years in Bartlesville. She and her late husband Dick Argo (along with A unt Zola) would visit Mon & Dad & would attend our annual Martin family reunions. They all l ived in Bartlesville & Aunt Zola was in a nursing home there before her death. Allene ha d 1 son Lyle Rowe from her first marriage to Bob Rowe. They lived in Sand Springs, Oklahom a west of Tulsa. I can remember us visiting them there when I was young. I'm not sure wher e they married - maybe Tulsa - she & Dick Argo may have married in Tulsa or Bartlesville . I never felt comfortable with the prospect of discussing Aunt Zola's possible "other marri ages" with Allene. And, I was not delving in serious genealogical research while growing up .
