[...]Father bought a small farm in Blackfork Valley [Scott County, Arkansas] where we had bet ter access to church and Sunday school of which he was a leader and fervent worker. Here wer e a number of Sebastian County old friends and families who had moved to this valley and esta blished homes; these with other new families the country was rapidly being populated and deve loping some community life and organization. John M. Martin with his family of three sons a nd four married daughters had moved here from Greenwood, Sebastian County, [Arkansas] where M r. Martin had been in the mercantile business for several years prior to the Civil war and o n moving to Blackfork opened the first store known in that valley. One of his daughters marr ied Mark Eppler, who lived ten miles east of Greenwood [Sebastian County, Arkansas] and liv ed on the farm now occupied by Squire L. Beech and the first schoolhouse to be built in tha t community was known as the Eppler Schoolhouse and the plot of land set apart for this schoo lhouse and for the cemetery was donated by Mark Eppler. Another daughter of Mr. Martins mar ried Wm. Cole, who also came from the "State of Sebastian" and located here. Mr. Cole had tw o grown daughters and a son by a former marriage. His son Bud Cole became a preacher of th e Gospel. Another daughter married Mans Slover, who lived about ten miles east in the Blans ett [Scott County, Arkansas] community on a farm which is still known as the old Slover Farm . Another daughter married John Verdell but of him the writer can remember but very little , but he helped to make up the citizenship of the new country. Mr. Martin's oldest son was T om [ Thomas]. Tom married a daughter of John Self and --into the best families known in t he valley. Tom [ Thomas Henry "Tom" Martin] was the father of two sons, John M. Jr. and We sley. John M. Martin [Jr.] is quite well known in Scott county, having been successful in p olitics there for years and has a son now living in Waldron, Tom Martin. John M. Jr. now li ves at Benton, Ark., Jack [ John W. "Jack" Martin] and Bill [William W. "Bill"] Martin, th e two other sons of John M. Martin Sr., grew up to manhood on Blackfork and as the other Mar tin Family, were leaders in the development of the highest community life. Early in the 70' s the Martin family moved to Parks, east of Waldron [Scott County, Arkansas] where the senio r Mr. Martin opened a store and continued in business there for many years. Jack [ John W . "Jack"] Martin became a teacher in the public schools and for many years was known as on e of the leading teachers of Scott County. He married a Miss Tate, who was also a teache r and they taught many schools together. Jack [ John W. "Jack"] Martin died at Danville, A rk., some 20 years ago. Bill [William W. "Bill"] Martin, his youngest brother, died in Cali fornia., many years ago.

FIRST COTTON GIN
If memory serves correctly, the first cotton gin in Blackfork Valley [Scott County, Arkansas ] was built and operated by John M. Martin, Sr., he also built the first wheat thresher whic h operated in connection with the cotton gin. This gin and thresher was operated by horsepow er and afforded a good public service of that day.

[Ibid:] [Page, 11]
---------------------
The building (Community Center, Church and School House) was a box house and the lumber was a ll rough, even the door shutters were of rough lumber. Not a glass window in the house nor a n opening on either side but openings at each end. This was on a stony hill about two mile s east of the John M. Martin home. It was voted to name this church, "Stony Point" and th e natural surroundings there could have been no better name. This was a Union church but th e Methodist organized and maintained a church at this place for several years. Great reviva l meetings were held here and people for ten and 15 miles around would attend, always being e ntertained in community homes.

---------------------
One of the early teachers in Blackfork valley was Prof. Nevills, to whom the writer attende d school when a small boy. This was about 1873, not sure about the year. It was taught i n a little log house which stood just north of the valley road about one mile west of the Jo hn M. Martin Sr., home and on the north side of Blackfork creek.
