!DEATH: From the family history notes of Mary Thelma (Martin) Moore Thomas of Salt Lake City , Utah, she has written, "Sol P. Martin was hung by bushwhackers during civil war," but she d oes not have any documentation as to where she obtained the above information. In my researc h I have not found any reference to actual hanging but I did see where it stated that Solomo n P. Martin was killed by bushwhackers. This book in question has somehow now disappeared fr om the L.D.S., Family Histoy Library so I am not able to give it's name and source.- Don Mart in Thomas.

!FAMILY HISTORY: ... The story my father Udell (Floyd) Jones has always told was more gruesom e than hanging. He said the Bushwhackers took him out on the nearby River and stood him o n a rock that was known as "Blood Rock." "They shot him so full of holes that they had to ca rry him home in a sheet" is the way I've always heard it. The rock had been used to kill mor e than one man and was supposedly imbedded with blood for awhile do to all the blood and what ever type of ammunition was used at that time. We have had many reunions through the years a nd I have heard discussions between my father and his siblings and the story has always bee n told this way, so obviously their mother and her brothers told it this way to them. Howeve r, it could be embellished, but the "Blood Rock" legend seems to corroborate something differ ent than a hanging. - Source - Laura (Jones) Knudson - e-mail - knudson@elltel.net

!FAMILY HISTORY: The river the rock is in is Spadra Creek. ... he [Floyd Udell Jones] says h e could see the blood in that rock when his Uncle Arthur showed it to him in 1945. - Sourc e - Laura (Jones) Knudson - e-mail - knudson@elltel.net

!FAMILY HISTORY: The story of Solomon P. Martin's death on August 21, 1864 as told by my moth er Manerva (Martin) Jones and her much admired brother Arthur Martin. On the occasion of m y Mother's death in June 1946, Straford, California, my father William Lewis Jones and I too k the deceased to Clarksville, Arkansas to be buried at Minnow Creek Cemetery. While ther e I spent some quality time with Uncle Arthur Martin. We went to the place of assasination a nd the story follows: The bushwackers rode up on horseback to the Martin home and ordered Sol omon Martin to come with them. They threatened to take the 12 year old son as well if he di d not comply as ordered. They took him to Spadra creek and placed him on a boulder in the cr eek and shot him so many times that he was unrecoginizabel from the waist up. The women ther e were at leat two, maybe three at the household then, and retrieved the body from the rock . This was done with a bed sheet and an oxen pulled wagon. I have seen this rock and its st ain that is supposed to be blood. This may be rust from the iron minerals released from so m uch shot. Many years later he was given a burial plot at Mt. Vernon Cemetery with a Union gr ave marker. It is there today. - Floyd Udell Jones February 10, 2003.

!BIO: "Sol Martin was home on sick leave in the Civil war. A gang of bushwhackers came and g ot him, took him up to Spadra Creek Hollow, north of Lone Pine and killed him. This was abou t 5 miles northwest of his home, at Martin's Spring, which is now in the Mt. Vernon community . The women of the community went with ox wagon, got the body, and buried him in the Mt. Ver non Cemetery. Another bunch of bushwhackers came and took the food, the only horse, and th e horse feed, and returned almost every day. The Martin family went with some of the Beans t o Mt. Vernon, Illinois, where some of the Beans lived. John Thomas Martin was 10 years old , the oldest of the children. They boarded a steamboat at Morrison's Bluff on the Arkansas R iver and sailed down to the Mississippi River, then up this stream to Neely's Landing in Illi nois; then overland to Mt. Vernon. They stayed there 2 years. The war over, they hired a ma n with team and wagon to move them back home. They came by way of Jasper, Newton County, t o the old home place, Martin Springs, about 7 miles north of Clarksville. Several years late r the people of the community formed a school district. John Thomas Martin suggested Mt. Ver non for the name, for the illinois town. The name was accepted and it still stands." The pre ceding was written by Orla C. Martin. - Source - Jayne McGuire - e-mail - mcguire@pldi.net
