Information is a letter from The Descendants Of Mexican War Veterans [Society]. P.O. Box 8304 82, Richardson, Texas 75083-0482. Letter addressed to Don Martin Thomas, Salt Lake City, U tah 84103. Postal Dated, NORTH TEXAS MPC PM 21 JUN 1994. Letter (In/Part) reads as follows:
-----------------
[...]Here’s what THE CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF ARKANSAS says[...]
[...]As for the first unit in which James M. Martin served:
Johnson County furnished the greater part of Company C [of Yell’s Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry ], which was mustered in on June 30, 1846... George W. Patrick [was] captain.
Yell’s Arkansas regiment was attached to the division commanded by General John E. Wool an d were briefly camped at present-day San Pedro Springs Park in San Antonio, during August an d September 1846. At that time it was called Camp Crockett. Afterwards, they marched to Nor thern Mexico. On February 22 and 23 1847 the regiment took part in the Battle of Buena Vista , near Saltillo - General Zachary Taylor’s greatest triumph during the Mexican War.[...]
[...]I suspect James M. Martin may have died young as a result of some illness contracted d uring the Mexican War. The veterans of this conflict appear to have had a higher than averag e mortality rate in the years immediately following the war.
