I certify that from the records of this office it appears that Edmond S. Smith was joined fo r service and enrolled as a private in Company “A” Fourth Regiment Arkansas Infantry Voluntee rs, at Clarksville Arkansas on the 19th day of April A.D. 1864; that he was never mustered in to the U.S. service; that pay is due him for enlistment; that he is charged with clothing i n kind received since enrollment $28.54 - (Twenty Eight & 54/100 dolls), and that he died i n U.S. General Hospital At Fort Smith Arks. Smith, desiring to Volunteer as a Soldier in the Army of The United States, fo r the term of three years, Do Declare, That I am forty four years and one month of age; tha t I have never been discharged form the United States service on account of disability, or b y sentence of a court martial, or by order before the expiration of a term of enlistment; an d I know no impediment to my serving honestly and faithfully as a soldier for three years . In the Pension Claim of Elizabeth Smith Mother of Edmond S. Smith Private, Co. A, 4th Reg’t , Arkansas Infantry Vols., personally came before me, a clerk of the Circuit Court, in and fo r the aforesaid County and State, Micheal M. Bean, who I hereby is a respectable and credib le person, and who, being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid claim that his ag e is 58 years, and he has been intimately acquainted with the above - named claimant since 18 48, and knew her son, the above - named soldier for 16 years immediately prior to his enlistm ent in the military service of the United States.
That said Elizabeth Smith has owned no real estate since enlistment of her said son Edmon d S. the husband and father having died before sons enlistment - at the time of enlistment o f said Edmond S. the said Elizabeth owned only two cows and calves about six head of hog s a small lot of household property the whole value of which was not more than one hundred do llars - the claimants income from all sources since her sons enlistment has been nothing ____ __ as _____ only given to her by friends - She has received a living since Sons death throug h _______ of friends and her own labor which has been ______ very little on account of her ag e The husband and father having died previous to sons enlistment and left nothing for suppor t of his widow and son.
That he has been well acquainted with said Elizabeth since 1848 Knew her said son Edmond S . from his birth to his death, Knew him to be a _________ ________ 4th Arks Infty. Knew tha t at the time of his enlistment he was living with his _____ mother Elizabeth and that he wa s her only dependance for support she not being able to support herself
He further declares that his post office address is Clarksville, County of Johnson, State o f Arkansas, and that he is not interested in said claim or concerned in its prosecution: tha t his knowledge of the foregoing facts was derived from an intimate acquaintance to said part ies since 1848 living neighbors to them

AFFIDAVIT TO CONTRIBUTIONS OF SOLDIER
For Use In Mother’s or Father’s Pension Claim.

In the matter of the Pension Claim of Elisabeth Smith mother of Edmond S. Smith, Co. A, Reg ’t Arks., Vols., personally came before me County Clerk, in and for the aforesaid County an d State, A.J. Watts, who I hereby certify is a respectable and credible person, and who, be ing duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid claim that his age is 44 years, and h e has been intimately acquainted with the above-named claimant since 1852, and knew her son t he above named soldier for 12 years immediately prior to his enlistment in the military servi ce of the United States.
That he had never been married, his mother the claimant was a widow at the time of his birt h his father having died prior thereto. In the year 1861 all the sons of claimant had left h ome, except this one who remained with his mother and was her sole dependent for support unti l he enlisted in 1864, and died shortly thereafter. He contributed to his mothers support b y performing all the labor on their little farm under her direction, being her sole and onl y dependence for that business, and after his enlistment he died before he drew any pay upo n which his said mother was relying for support, after his said enlistment.
He further declares that his post office address is Cotton Wood Cherokee Nation, Ind[ian] Ter [ritory], and that he is not interested in said claim or concerned in its prosecution; that h is knowledge of the foregoing facts was derived from his living in the immediate neighbor hom e of the claimant during his acquaintance with her. Also personally appeared M.J. WATTS, residing at No. ________ in ____________ street, in Pa w Paw, I. T. [Indian Territory], and E. Smith residing at No.________, in __________ street , in Fort Smith Arks., persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and w ho, being by me duly sworn, say that they were present and saw Elisabeth Smith, the claimant , make her mark to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe from th e appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with her that she is the identical perso n represented to be, and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.

MOTHER’S DECLARATION FOR ARMY PENSION.

On this 3d day of March A.D. 1866, before me, Clerk of the Circuit Court for the County of Jo hnson and State of Arkansas personally appeared Mrs. Elisabeth Smith, aged 49 years, a resi dent of Johnson County in the State of Arkansas who, being duly sworn according to law, dot h on her oath make the following declaration: That she is the widow of Abraham Smith and mot her of Edmond S. Smith, who was a Private in Company “A” commanded By Captain Ira D. Brons on in the 4th Regiment of Arkansas Infantry Volunteers, and who die’d at Fort Smith Arkansa s on or about the Eight day of June 1866, by reason of Typhoid Fever, he die’d in General Hos pital at said Fort Smith of said disease contracted while a Soldier as aforesaid in the lin e of duty
She further declares, that her said son, upon whom she was wholly dependant for support, havi ng left no widow or minor child under sixteen years of age surviving, declarant makes this ap plication for a pension, under the act of Congress approved July 14, 1862, and refers to th e evidence filed herewith, and that in the proper department to establish her claim.
She also declares that she has not in any way been engaged in, or aided or abetted the rebell ion in the United States, that she is not in receipt of a pension under the second section o f the act above mentioned, or under any other act, and that she has not married since the dea th of her son the soldier above named.
She hereby constitutes and appoints Rep Daniels & Sherwood her attorneys with power of substi tution to prosecute the claim and procure a certificate, with full power and authority to d o and perform all and every lawful act and thing whatsoever necessary and requisite to be don e in and about the premises, except drawing the money, which will be hereafter provided fo r my post office address is Clarksville in the County of Johnson and State of Arkansas.

Grides residents of Johnson County, A rkansas persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, who being duly swor n according to law, declare that they are personally acquainted with Mrs. Elizabeth Smith w ho has made and subscribed the foregoing declaration in their presence, and were personally a cquainted with her and her son before he entered the military service of the United States . That her son, the said Edmond S. Smith was the person who served as stated in said declar ation. That from their knowledge of, and acquaintance with the family of the declarant and h er son, the soldier above named, they know that he left surviving no widow, or child, or chil dren under sixteen years of age; that she was wholly dependent upon him for support, and tha t she was the wife and is now the Widow of Abraham Smith and has been a widow since the deat h of her said son. That they reside as above stated and have no interest in the prosecutio n of this claim. We were members of said Co. “A” we know that he enlisted in said company a s stated above and I William Bristow being O.S. of said company knew the Surgeon of the Hos pital reported to the company that he died as above stated, that said disease was contracte d while in the line of duty as a soldier as aforesaid } William Bristow

Reg’t, 4 Ark Infantry Vols., personally came before me, Circuit Clerk, in and for th e aforesaid County and State, Elizabeth Smith, who, being duly sworn, declares that she is t he claimant in the above - described claim, and her Post office address is Excelsior, Count y of Sebastian, State of Arkansas; that My residence and P.O. address at the time of my so n’s death was Clarksville Johnson Co. Ark., I lived at Clarksville until the year 1870 whe n I moved to Sebastian Co. Ark. making Greenwood my P.O. until four or five years ago when m y present P.O. was established (Excelsior)
At the time of the soldiers death I was a widow, I had three children living: Thomas M. Smi th aged 28 years Sarah Catherine Bates age about 26 years, and Zilphia Hale age abou t 22 years. This was all the members of my family at that time.
I have supported myself ever since the soldiers death without any legal support or help.
When the affiant signs by mark, two persons must attest by writing their names on the lines b elow.
