Bea n 5 John Bean 4, Walter Bean 3, William Bean 2, William Bean 1, from Scotland to America 1767 ) He was a brother to Tennessee (Been) Raburn of Fam. 8755. b. 10-18-1858, Clarksville, Ark. , d. 10-13-1949, Greenwood, Ark., ? bur, in Valley View Cem., Greenwood, m. 3-4-1877, Greenwo od, Ark., Margaret Talbott, b. 10-14-1859, Waldron, Ark., d. 6-1-1956, Hackett, Ark., bur. wi th John in Valley View Cem., Greenwood, d/o David & Suzanna (__?__) Talbott. The dates show n here come from the Family Bible and copied for this report by Mrs. Velma Goforth of Greenwo od, Ark. John & Margaret had 14 chrildren prob. most b. at Greenwood, Ark. tho this is not c ertain. After they were m. they farmed 80 acres of land near old stump springs on Backbone M ountain, and soon purchased land adjoining. They built a pioneer-type log cabin and moved i n before there was a fireplace. Margaret cooked "Camp-out style" for two weeks until the fir eplace was finished. Their 70th Wedding Anniversary was a great event in their community, an d was celebrated by the schools of Greenwood and the county. Their home was 7 miles S.E. o f Greenwood and is known today as Been Hill. Adjoining their place was Been Ridge, owned b y Rufus LeRoy Been. The folks of Been Hill and Been Ridge were life long neighbors tho the y did not know of their family relationship. (See Fam. #(4787) This book tells the relation ship. The spelling of the name [Bean ot Been] was changed because of a Clerical error in som e legal papers so rather than have a correction made, they just adopted the new spelling. H e d. 2 years after their 70th wedding celebration.

!BIOGRAPHY: A Pioneer Family, By Gladys Walgreen. Mr. John Been was born in the year 1859 i n Clarksville, Arkansas. His parents died while he was a very young boy. His grandmother, M rs. Elizabeth Smith assumed the responsibility of caring for John and his sisters, Mary Tenne ssee, Jane and Vicy Catherine. Other foster children of Elizabeth Smith were James, Sterlin g and Rob Bates, Monroe, Edd, Jesse and May Long. They all lived as brothers and sisters o n the place now owned by Ray Cahoon which was deeded to Elizabeth Smith by Robert Bates, uncl e of Sterling, Rob and James Bates. They were all well cared for, taught and trained by Eliz abeth Smith who they lovingly referred to as Granny Smith. Mr. Beens wife, Margaret [Talbott ] Been was born in Waldron, Arkansas in the year 1860. At age 9, she assumed the responsibil ity of keeping house and caring for her mother who was an invalid for many years. Mr. and Mr s. Been were married 4 March 1877. At first they farmed near the old Stump Springs on Backbo ne Mountain. Later, they bought an 80 acre farm which joined the farm where he had lived wit h Granny Smith and the other nine of Grannie's foster children. They built a pioneer log cab in on their 80 acres which had five acres cleared. They moved in before the fireplace was fi nished and Mrs. Been did the cooking campfire style for 2 monts. The Beens reared a large ha ppy family. They all worked hard but took time out for recreation and rest. Mr. Been alway s rested or napped for 30 minutes after his noon meal. Mr. and Mrs. Been are remembered fo r their generosity and hospitality; especially their summer banquets of fruit and water melon . They both had delightful hobbies. He was a beekeeper and his hobby brought him a nice inc ome along with pleasure. Another hobby was raising decorative dipper gourds. He made childr en happy by telling stories of the past. Mrs. Been hobby was making beautiful quilts. The y both liked to visit their many friends and were good listeners and helped solve many proble ms and helped bear their many burdens. In their late life they made trips by train to place s of interest in the United States. On their 50th wedding anniversary they had an all day cel ebration. Mr. and Mrs. Swift, teachers at nearby New Hope School were asked to bring the scho ol children. Mrs. Swift planned and appropriate program for the children to give. The even t of their 70th anniversary was known far and wide. They were married 72 years when Mr. Bee n died at the age of 91. Mrs. Been died 1 June 1955, age 96. At Mr. Beens death he was refe rred to as a "Man of God," like Abraham of old. Mrs. Been was referred to as a virtuous woma n. They were members of the Valley View Church of Christ and their remains rest in the Valle y View Cemetery near their old home in South Sebastian County. !BIOGRAPHY: Benjamin F. Been - source information from, A Bean/Been Scrapbook of The Clan Mac Bean History & The Genealogy of The Descendants of William & Naomi Bates Bean as compiled b y Frank E. Been., 5500 Navilleton Road, Floyd's Knobs, Indiana 47119 - Uncle Ben was born 6 O ct 1886 in Sebastian County, Arkansas. He married Myrtle Butler in Steiger, Oklahoma where h e lived for a short time. They had one son before they were divorced. Uncle Ben never remar ried & lived out most of his life at Bean Hill with his parents. He spent the last years o f his life in the Redbud Nursing Home in Greenwood Arkansas. He was an avid St Louis Cardina l Baseball fan. Before going to France in WW I, he trained with the 38th Inf Div at Camp She lby Miss. In fact he was in Co M 152nd Inf., the same unit of the Indiana NG that I enliste d in in 1947.
