----------
Saunders S. Slover, although now a prominent citizen of Scott County, Ark., was born in Mad
ison County, Ark., November 17, 1835, to Samuel and Emeline (Chote) Slover, the forme
r a Tennessean and the latter a native of South Carolina, their births occurring March 5, 181
1, and September 28, 1816, respectively. The mother is still living, her home being in Weste
rn Texas. They were married March 22, 1831, and during the very first settling of this count
ry came here and located in Madison County, on Kings’ River. The father was a very successfu
l farmer, but was also the proprietor of a dry-goods establishment at Veal's Station, and a
t the time of his death, which occurred in Parker County, Tex., in 1873, he left a large esta
te and fortune to be divided among his family. He owned large tracts of valuable real estat
e in Texas, and was a practical business man in all respects. When a young man he joined th
e Masonic order, and after his marriage built the Masonic Hall at Veal's Station, Tex., and d
onated it to the lodge. He was very prominent in Masonic circles, and was also an earnest me
mber of the Methodist Episcopal Church, as is his widow. In the neighborhood in which he liv
ed he was an arbitrator in disputes between his neighbors, and his advice and councils were e
arnestly listened to and usually followed with good results. He was one of the first settler
s of Western Texas, and at one time suffered severe losses by having his cattle driven off an
d killed by Comanche Indians. He and his neighbors were compelled to carry guns to church fo
r protection. He was a life-long Democrat, and had three sons in the Confederate Army who fo
ught bravely in many bloody combats. To himself and wife nine children were born, and of th
e three that are living the subject of this sketch is the oldest. He spent his school days i
n Madison County, Ark., but in 1848 went with his parents to Texas, where, during his youth a
nd early manhood he experienced many of the hardships, dangers and privations of pioneer life
. He made his home on his father's farm until twenty-two years of age, then worked for himse
lf in Parker County, Tex., until 1867, when he and his family came back to Arkansas and locat
ed on a farm on Clear Fork of Fourche River, in Scott County, this farm being his present pl
ace of abode. He is the owner of 200 acres of fine land, and is one of the most practical an
d successful agriculturists of Blansett Township. He was married, 1862, to Miss Nancy Cathe
rine Whisenhunt, daughter of John Whisenhunt, her birth occurring in Georgia, August 24, 1
840. A family of Twelve children have been born to them, all of whom are living save two: J
ames W. [ Slover] (who died when twenty-two years of age), and Ira Seamon [Slover] (who die
d when a child). Those living are James M. [Slover], Thomas S. [ Slover], Flora A.M. [ Sl
over], Sarah F. [ Slover], Calvin W. [ Slover], Lillie S. [ Slover], Disa P. [ Slover]
, William T. [ Slover], Nancy J. [ Slover] and John S. [ Slover] Mr. Slover has been marr
ied twice, first when twenty years of age to Miss Mary Martin, of Texas. She was born Ma
y 29, 1835, and died in Scott County, Ark., having born three children: Malinda Jane [ Slove
r], John Samuel [ Slover] and William T. [ Slover], the last named having died at the age o
f two years. The Present Mrs. Slover is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and poli
tically he is a Democrat. He is a thorough-going citizen, and is ever ready to aid good caus
es.
----------
!NOTE: Note above that it states, “Mr. Slover has been married twice, first when twenty year
s of age to Miss Mary Martin, of Texas.” It might be that John Miller Martin took his fam
ily to Texas around 1855 for a short while, making it possible for Saunders S. “Sanders” “Ma
ns” Slover to meet and marry “Miss Mary Martin, of Texas”? John Miller Martin might have r
eturned to Arkansas from Texas giving everyone the assumption that he and his family were fro
m Texas? Note in the U.S., 1860 Sebastian County, Arkansas census, that follows, that Saund
ers S. “Sanders” “Mans” Slover's and Mary ( Martin) Slover's children were born in Arkansa
s. Also note above how it states, “He [ Saunders S. “Sanders” “Mans” Slover] made his hom
e on his father’s farm until twenty-two years of age, then worked for himself in Parker Count
y, Tex., until 1867, when he and his family came back to Arkansas and located on a farm on Cl
ear Fork of Fourche River, in Scott County, this farm being his present place of abode.” I
t appears that there is a mistake in the GOODSPEED BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL MEMOIRS and th
e historical sketch on Saunders S. “Sanders” “Mans” Slover should read, “He [ Saunders S. “
Sanders” “Mans” Slover] made his home on his father’s farm until twenty-two years of age,” a
nd then marries Mary Martin in Texas? Mary ( Martin) Slover and Saunders S. “Sanders
” “Manses in August of 1861. Saunders S. “Sanders” “Mans” Slover marries for the second ti
me in 1862 to a Nancy Catherine Whisenhunt. About 1864 Saunders S. “Sanders” “Mans” Slo
ver and his second wife, Nancy Catherine (Whisenhunt) Slover move to Texas. While in Texas
, this time he fights or the Confederate Army, and then Saunders S. “Sanders” “Mans” Slover
, works “for himself in Parker County, Tex., until 1867, when he and his family return to Ark
ansas and locate on a farm on Clear Fork of Fourche River, in Scott County, this farm being h
is present place of abode.”
