(Britt) Martin came to Floyd Co., early - the exact date is not recalled. They lived o n the north part of what is now the Lindsey Graham place. My dad, their son Marion Wesley "W es" Martin, was born Feb. 8, 1871 near Waldron, Ark., moved to Texas in his early life. He c ame 1888, as a single man to visit his parents here. June 18, 1891 Vernon, Texas he marrie d Sallie Berry, born 1870, likely in Stephens Co. 1898 "Wes" and his family came by covere d wagon to Floyd Co. Martha Elizabeth (Britt) Martin, sept-mother to Marion Wesley "Wes" M artin, moved to Dalhart, Dallam County, Texas. "Uncle Wes" and "Aunt Sallie" as they becam e affectionately known, first rented a farm in the Muncy Community, then a farm from W.A. Mas sie. In 1906 they bought 160 acres of land from Mr. Massie; it was virgin land, about 2 mile s from town on what is now known as the Sandhill Road. They first dug a well and then a dugo ut, living in the covered wagon while this was done. Next they started a bedroom which woul d be connected to the dugout. I remember hearing them tell that they had the walls and roo f done and were rushing to get the flooring done before the baby's arrival date, but I made m y appearance before expected, even before the flooring was begun, so I was born in the dugout ! I carry the name of Will Massie Martin for Col. W.M. Massie, as he was called. My older s isters were given the privilege of naming me, and since they were great admirers of Mr. Massi e, they gave their little baby brother his name. My parents were simple hard-working folk an d taught their children by the Golden Rule. They were good neighbors, generous with the litt le they had. No one was sick or needy, but they were given help, "Wes" died July 8, 1937, Sa llie died 15 April 1949, both buried in Floydada Cemetery. Their children: Mary married Geor ge Yandell; Jewell married Jack Yandell, a cousin of George, she married 2nd, Jim Crowford: T homas Henry born 1901, married Jimmie Joelsom. Gidcomb, 2nd John Bouska. Two Marti n infants were there somewhere. I am the only member of the family now living in Floydada . In my younger days I worked as a "concrete man," doing all kinds of cement jobs. In my la ter days I have had a second-hand shop. MARTIN FAMILY STORIES
Daddy [ Will Massie Martin] has always said his father didn't say much about his family bu t I will tell what I have heard him tell.
Thomas Henry Martin had 2 bro[thers] Jack & Bill. The best I can figure Jack would b e John W. "Jack" Martin and Bill would be William Wilson "Bill" Martin.
Tom [ Thomas Henry "Tom" Martin] and Jack [ John W. "Jack" Martin] fought in the Civil war . Jack [John W. "Jack" Martin] came to visit in Floyd County & left his Civil war rifl e & Daddy played with it and tore it up. I have no record of either.
Bill [ William Wilson "Bill" Martin] owned land in Floyd County, Texas. N.E. of Floydada clos e to South Plains.
Tom [ Thomas Henry "Tom" Martin] had taken his boys, John [ John Millard Martin] & Wes [ Ma rion Wesley "Wes" Martin] to the store of his father in Arkansas. He [ John Miller Martin] t old Tom to "get them boys out of here before they tear something up."
There was never anything said about divorce between Tom [ Thomas Henry "Tom" Martin] & Meli ssa [Melissa Margaret ( Self) Martin], I had always assumed she had died maybe in a child bi rth as so many others did. There was a baby died & he had an extra thumb on one hand. To m [ Thomas Henry "Tom" Martin], Martha [Martha Elizabeth (Britt) Martin] & family moved to Te xas, maybe Brown County around 1885. It was always said John [John Millard Martin] & " Wes " [ Marion Wesley "Wes" Martin] lived with them.
They moved to Floyd County, Texas. around 1891. When Wes [ Marion Wesley "Wes" Martin] wa s about 16 yrs old his step - mother [Martha Elizabeth ( Britt) Martin] told him go feed th e horses and this made him mad so he went back to Arkansas. This would be about 1887 about t he time you found the "Guardian Bound" appointing Spencer Self guardian, Spencer was his m other’s brother.
Wes [ Marion Wesley "Wes" Martin] married Sallie Berry in Vernon, Texas 18 June 1891 . I have marriage license. The article I wrote about T.H. Martin was in the Floyd Co. Hes perian Floydada, Texas.
