, Rt. 1 Box 112, Lockney, Texas. Letter reads as follows: Wichita Falls, Texas, Sept. 14, 195
8. Dear Annie Lee and Jewel: Have been trying to find time to write you for past two weeks bu
t have busy and two this is a hard letter to write. Dad passed away on August 27th of an acu
te heart attack. He stated at breakfast table that morning that he felt better than he had i
n months and was going to take his walk early as it was cool. I went to work as usual and ab
out 8:45 a lady called me and said dad had fallen in front of her house on the side walk an
d she thought he should be taken to hospital. (She lives about 1 1/2 blocks from home). I a
sked her to call the ambulance and I would call the doctor and we would meet them at the hosp
ital. We got to hospital about same time and Dad didn't seem to be in any pain and was consc
ious all the time. He talked to me and took his billfold, coin purse, knife and keys out o
f his pockets and handed them to me. He said he got a little dizzy and fell. Dr. was afrai
d he was Paralyzed from hips down as he couldn't get any reflexes from his knees. He asked d
ad if he could draw his knees up and he said "yes" and did so, so that let paralysis out. Do
ctor joked with dad about them getting old and dad laughed. Dr. said they would keep him i
n hospital 24 hours and check him over good and he told the nurses what to do and for them t
o call him if they needed him. I was standing at dad's side with my hand on his arm and th
e Doctor had just gotten outside of door when I heard dad give a little grown and I looked a
t him and he was having difficulty in breathing. I called to Dr. Prichard to hurry back a
s I thought he was dying and the doctor and nurse were there in a jiffy and he was gone in ab
out 2 seconds no suffering - just went to sleep. The Doctor gave him an injection to stimula
te his heart, but it did no good. Dr. said he never saw anyone go as quickly as he did. Tha
t's the way dad wanted to go. He always had a horror to falling and breaking his hip or le
g and being an invalid and a care for several years. I sure do miss him - he was so much com
pany and help to me in many ways. He always had breakfast with me and always had the house c
ool for me in the summer and warm in the winter when I would get home from work. Mary, Bil
l & daughter, Pete & husband and George came down for funeral. Tom, my brother, and Norene m
y sister, came as soon as they received news. Lorene was sick and could not come. Uncle Jes
se Martin & Aunt Kate, & Carl & Will came and so did Uncle Claude. Aunt Selma was sick and c
ouldn't come. Hope all of you are well and doing okay. I would appreciate your sending thi
s on to Jewel as it is for both of you. I have so many letters to write and I don't have tim
e at the office to write personal letters. Dad always looked forward to hearing from you an
d Jewel. He loved all of Wess's children. Love to all of you and hope to hear from you soon
. Your cousin Virgie Rivenbark
