!BIO: Will and Bea Martin Family. In early 1941 while the depression was still on, Will and B
eatrice Martin came to Plainview with one son, Jesse Marion, who was born July 14, 1939, at F
loydada, Texas, in search of work which was hard to find in those days. Will put in applicat
ion for work at Peerless Pump Co. They told him to be down each morning and if they needed h
elp for that day they would let him work. After two weeks of this they hired him. Will work
ed until spring when it began raining (forty-one was a very wet year) and that stopped this k
ind of work. He then baled hay some for Luther Buchanan when the weather premitted, but tha
t wasn't a steady job either. He later worked as a plumber for George Dallinger. They wer
e in Plainview part of three years. A daughter, Carolyn Ann, was born April 30, 1941 in Floy
dada. While in Plainview they lived down in the draw on Columbia Street and was flooded ou

!BIO: Information found in the book, History Of Floyd County, Texas, By Floyd County Historic
al Museum - 1979, Page, 318.; "Uncle Wes" Martin., Thomas Henry Martin and wife, Martha E. (
Britt) Martin came to Floyd Co., early - the exact date is not recalled. They lived on the n
orth part of what is now the Lindsey Graham place. My dad, their son Marion Wesley "Wes" Mar
tin, was born Feb. 8, 1871 near Waldron, Ark., moved to Texas in his early life. He came 188
8, as a single man to visit his parents here. June 18, 1891 Vernon, Texas he married Salli
e Berry, born 1870, likely in Stephens Co. 1898 "Wes" and his family came by covered wagon t
o Floyd Co. Later, the elder Martins returned to Ark., to live., Tom [Thomas Henry "Tom" Mar
tin.] went back to Arkansas to visit, died there, and is buried at Parks Arkansas, Parks Cit
y Cemetery. Martha Elizabeth (Britt) Martin, sept-mother to Marion Wesley "Wes" Martin, move
d to Dalhart, Dallam County, Texas. "Uncle Wes" and "Aunt Sallie" as they became affectionat
ely known, first rented a farm in the Muncy Community, then a farm from W.A. Massie. In 190
6 they bought 160 acres of land from Mr. Massie; it was virgin land, about 2 miles from tow
n on what is now known as the Sandhill Road. They first dug a well and then a dugout, livin
g in the covered wagon while this was done. Next they started a bedroom which would be conne
cted to the dugout. I remember hearing them tell that they had the walls and roof done and w
ere rushing to get the flooring done before the baby's arrival date, but I made my appearanc
e before expected, even before the flooring was begun, so I was born in the dugout! I carr
y the name of Will Massie Martin for Col. W.M. Massie, as he was called. My older sisters we
re given the privilege of naming me, and since they were great admirers of Mr. Massie, they g
ave their little baby brother his name. My parents were simple hard-working folk and taugh
t their children by the Golden Rule. They were good neighbors, generous with the little the
y had. No one was sick or needy, but they were given help, "Wes" died July 8, 1937, Sallie d
ied 15 April 1949, both buried in Floydada Cemetery. Their children: Mary married George Yan
dell; Jewell married Jack Yandell, a cousin of George, she married 2nd, Jim Crowford: Thoma
s Henry born 1901, married Jimmie Joelsom. He died Dec. 29, 1957; Wm. Massie [Will Massie Ma

) July 29, 1935; Anne Lee born 1913, married 1st L.C. Gidcomb, 2nd John Bouska. Two Martin i
nfants were there somewhere. I am the only member of the family now living in Floydada. I
n my younger days I worked as a "concrete man," doing all kinds of cement jobs. In my late
r days I have had a second-hand shop. We have 3 children; Jesse Marion married Priscilla Hood
