!LETTER: Information is a letter from Pat Nelson Eppler, Mason, Texas. Letter addressed t o Don Martin Thomas, Salt Lake City, Utah 84103. Postal Dated, U.S. POSTAGE PAID MASON, T X 76856 MAY 16, 94.
----------
May 16, 1994
Dear Don Thomas
I have very little information on Elizabeth Catheryn Martin or her father John M. Martin or h er mother Lavina Giesling. [Lavinia Lipe] I would like very much to have any information o n John Martin or Lavina Giesling [Lavinia Lipe] that you might have.
Elizabeth Martin married Henry Tipton Eppler and of course I have a lot more information o n the Eppler Family.
As you will see from the information I am sending, I am also kin to the Thomas (maybe not you r family). Jonathan Eppler married Elsie Thomas and his son John Eppler married Alice Booth , who I believe was his first cousin, her mother being a Thomas.
Henry Tipton and Elizabeth lived in Ark., at the time of the Civil war I know, because Henr y Tipton went into the army there. During the Civil war, with the war and civil unrest (stea ling, murder and etc.) the Eppler family and probably others left Ark., and came to Bastrop , Texas (called Red Rock then) to get away from all the trouble. When the war was over Henr y Tipton, not knowing the family had moved, walked back to Ark., and was told his family ha d moved to Texas. So he then had to walk to Texas. The day he arrived at the family home i n Texas, they were burying one of his daughters who had died a day or two before.
In the year 1880, Henry Tipton and Elizabeth moved to Mason Texas (Mason County)(what was Fo rt Mason during the Civil war) and camped on the outskirts of town. But that first night the re was so much shooting and bullets flying from drunk cowboys in the saloons, that they move d west of Mason. There Henry Tipton's son Henry Walter Eppler bought land and he lived hi s last day here. Henry Tipton and Elizabeth are buried in the Coffey Cemetery west of Mason , Texas. The land I still own, along with some more.
You mentioned Caldwell County, Texas (it is just south of Bastrop County, Red Rock being nea r the county line). Maybe others from Ark., settled in Caldwell County, but Henry Tipton an d Elizabeth were in Bastrop County before coming to Mason County.
You said you did not find Henry Tipton in the 1870 U.S. census, I suggest the Eppler famil y was in Bastrop County at this time.
I have not been much help on Elizabeth Catheryn Martin or her family at this point. I am al ways trying to get information on the family tree, so maybe will find more information later . Will write to you if I do.
Keep in touch,
Pat Nelson Eppler
My line to Henry Tipton and Elizabeth are as follows:
