!FAMILY: Information found in the Herald Democrat Newspaper, Clarksville, Johnson County, Ark ansas. Nov. 26, 1940. FAMILY LIVES ON FARM SETTLED 99 YEARS AGO. (Editor's Note: This is anot her in a series of articles about living pioneers of Johnson county.) By Guy KING. Just sout h of Harmony on a little hill with a wonderful view of the Ozark mountains live Mr. and Mrs . John C. BASKIN. They are on the same farm that his father, John M. BASKIN, settled 99 year s ago. This farm still produces a living for this couple of fine old folks. He was 83 las t September 13 and she is 73. Their birthdays coming only three days apart. They have bee n married 53 years. They do their own work, get around as though they had quite a while to b e with the good folks of Harmony. When they celebrated their golden wedding, 107 neighbors an d relatives showed up to help enjoy the day. They have eight living children, 26 grandchildr en and one great grandchild. Two of their children, Robert and Ella, live in Nevada; Eula liv es in Arizona; Roach lives in Californis, but is now home on a visit; Avo lives in Alix and J ames, Will and Dewel live at Harmony. And now we will take you back to the comming of the fi rst Baskin to Johnson county. It was in 1839 that William BASKIN came here from Tennessee . He settled near Cove Creek on what is known as the Stoke JACOBS farm and from that day unt il this we have had the Baskin family in Johnson county. The family is of Scotch-Irish desce nt. The children of William BASKIN were: Thomas, Calhoun, J.M., Hugh, Ruth, Caroline and Mani ssa. Manissa married Lem PRYOR, father of Dick PRYOR; Ruth married a Mr. HIGHTOWER and Caroli ne married a Mr. PHILLIPS and they moved to Missouri. Calhoun BASKIN had one son, named Hance , who became a preacher. Hugh BASKIN had only one child, C.C. BASKIN. Hugh went to Californi a during the gold rush and did not come back for a number of years, and after visiting his fa mily for awhile suddenly disappeared never to be heard from again. Thomas BASKIN was marrie d twice and the children from the first union were; Thomas Jr., George, John and Polly. Of th ese, George died during the Civil war, Thomas Jr. lived in the west Mt. Zion community. Joh n went to Oklahoma and Polly married a Mr. JOHNSON and she was the mother of T.A. and Will JO HNSON, formerly of Lone Pine. Of the second marriage there was one child, Robert BASKIN wh o at one time served as deputy sheriff in this county. John M. BASKIN, son of William the fi rst, married Melissa LASTER, daughter of Abraham LASTER, and their children were: John C. BAS KIN, Robert M. BASKIN, S. Frank BASKIN, William BASKIN, James K. BASKIN, Nancy, who married J .B. PORTER; Hester Ann, who married Ash SWIFT; Octavia, who married Will DAVIS and moved to S cott county; Manissa, who married Callie PORTER; Mary who married Ezra ADKINS; and Dorthulia , who married Robert F. GILLIAM and now lives in Oklahoma. The Baskin Family has had some me mbers to reach several years above the three score and ten alloted time. We find that Willia m BASKIN, the first, lived to be better than 80; John M. BASKIN reached 89; Melissa BASKIN wa s 86 at the time of death; and Nancy BASKIN PORTER climbed the latter of life to 92. S. Fran k BASKIN is today 76. He lives just a short way from John C. BASKIN. The listing gives th e "line-up" of the older Baskin family. There is quite a number of the younger Baskin folk s now living at Harmony and a number of them hae gone to other states to earn their living . They are hard workers, good neighbors, and all are helpful in community work. Charles BAS KIN, son of C.C. BASKIN, was county judge of this county several years. He then moved to Okl ahoma, where he served in the legislature for two terms. "Uncle John" BASKIN, being the olde st in the tribe of BASKINS, we have named this article for him. He is a friend of all that k new him and we are glad to congratulate him and his life partner, "Aunt Annie," for their lon g and useful life.
